American Express unveils new global HQ in Manhattan

American Express just unveiled plans for a nearly 2 million-square-foot global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center, staking one of the boldest corporate claims in Lower Manhattan’s next chapter. The financial powerhouse will become the sole owner and occupant of the 55-story tower at 200 Greenwich Street — a skyline-defining move that locks in its long-term future at the center of Downtown Manhattan.

“American Express’ investment to build its new headquarters in this landmark location is a powerful statement about the future of Lower Manhattan. I can’t imagine a better partner to complete the World Trade Center campus than American Express, an iconic institution embodying the strength, resilience, and global significance of the project.” - Lisa Silverstein, Chief Executive Officer of Silverstein Properties

Set to rise next to the Oculus and reshape the skyline by 2031, the tower will accommodate up to 10,000 employees across flexible, next-generation workspaces designed around collaboration, technology, and well-being. The project signals a decisive reinvestment in Lower Manhattan — reinforcing American Express’ nearly 200-year roots in New York while doubling down on the future of work in the city’s financial core.

The building is being developed by Silverstein Properties and designed by Foster + Partners, the globally recognized architecture firm behind some of the world’s most forward-thinking towers. Plans call for more than an acre of outdoor space woven into the structure through greenery-filled terraces and garden decks overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Fully electric and powered by advanced smart-building systems, the headquarters will pursue LEED certification as part of a broader sustainability strategy.

A network of landscaped terraces and gardens provides generous outdoor spaces and contact with nature in the pursuit of a healthier and more desirable working lifestyle.” — Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman of Foster + Partners

Built on land owned by the Port Authority under a long-term ground lease, the development is expected to generate more than 3,200 construction-related jobs and contribute billions to both New York City and New York State’s economies. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with doors projected to open in 2031. Until then, American Express will remain at its longtime headquarters at 200 Vesey Street.
