One of the most all-around, amenity-driven luxury communities in the country is sitting inside North Lake Tahoe. Martis Camp packs a members-only private ski lift, a Tom Fazio golf course ranked among the country's best new private layouts, homes running well past $20 million, and enough on-site amenities to make leaving the gates feel unnecessary. Forbes calls it "possibly the best four-season private community in the U.S." Golf Digest goes further, naming it "the standard for golf-and-ski living in all of America."

The community spans 2,177 acres of Martis Valley, between Truckee and North Lake Tahoe along Highway 267, with elevations running from 5,900 to 7,100 feet. Developer DMB broke ground in 2006 and held the plan to just 671 homesites, every one a custom build governed by an Architectural Handbook, with estate parcels averaging more than 1.5 acres.

Winter starts at the front gate. The Martis Camp Express, a members-only high-speed quad, climbs 5,128 feet from inside the community straight onto the slopes of Northstar California Resort™, no other private community in Lake Tahoe puts a lift of this scale behind its own gatehouse. Members skip the resort village entirely, boarding on their own land and climbing 1,722 vertical feet before their first run.

The lift opened for the 2008-09 season, extending the former Lookout Express 2,306 feet down to a base inside the community and linking members to Northstar California Resort™'s roughly 3,170 skiable acres, 20 lifts, and more than 100 trails. Home-pickup shuttles and valet ski service carry members to the lift, and slopeside, the roughly 12,970-square-foot Lookout Lodge, recently expanded with heated underground parking, carries the day from breakfast through après, with a bar and fireside seating inside, a ski shop at the ready, and on-mountain storage so gear never leaves the hill. Members never touch a public parking lot.

Golf gets the same treatment with Tom Fazio's 18-hole championship course stretching past 7,700 yards, ranked the No. 3 Best New Private Course of 2009 by Golf Digest, with Fazio himself calling it as good as any course he has designed.

Martis Camp is a property that never seems to run out of amenities — an 18-hole putting par winds through the property, dozens of heated tennis and pickleball courts scattered throughout the mountains, climbing gyms, zipline courses, basketball courts, gyms, wellness recovery clinics, and their own music amphitheatre to name a few.

Above the 18th green, the Camp Lodge anchors it all. Roughly 50,000 square feet flow from a golf shop through dining and lounge spaces into fitness, a day spa, and locker rooms, with an outdoor lap pool heated for year-round swims alongside soaking and jetted tubs.

Down the hill, the Family Barn stacks bowling lanes over an indoor basketball court, a movie theater, an art loft, and a library, with a stocked fishing lake and an outdoor amphitheater just beside it.

Then there is the water. Martis Camp holds two properties on the North Shore, both in Tahoe Vista about 12 miles from the gate. The Beach Shack has run since 2014 on roughly an acre of private sand, with valet parking, kayaks, paddleboards, casual dining, and a 35-foot yacht for member lake tours. The new beach club came in November 2025, when the club acquired the Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort, adding 3.2 acres with 275 feet of Lake Tahoe frontage and 17,250 square feet of beach, one of the largest sandy stretches on the lake. Staff run valet, watercraft, chaise lounges with towel service, shower suites, and casual dining.

Martis Camp set the template that a newer wave of private mountain clubs, from The Alpine Club in Telluride to Cabot Revelstoke in British Columbia, is now chasing. Getting there stays simple: Truckee Tahoe Airport sits directly adjacent for private aircraft, and Reno-Tahoe International, with nonstop service from more than 20 U.S. cities, is about 30 minutes out.
