Nashville International Airport's construction budget is set for a significant increase, with the "New Horizon" program potentially reaching over $2.1 billion, marking a 45% rise from earlier phases. This ambitious expansion includes enhancing the airport's infrastructure to accommodate the city's rapid growth, according to CEO Doug Kreulen. The new plans exceed the scale of the prior "BNA Vision" project, which recently culminated with new facilities, including the first on-site hotel and expanded gate capacity.
The "New Horizon" initiative aims to expand from 54 to 70 gates by 2028, involving major upgrades to Concourse A and an extension of Concourse D. Kreulen noted the strong demand for the new gate capacity, likening it to a fully rented apartment building, with all new concession spaces already claimed.
This phase also introduces several strategic additions, including a new parking garage, a multipurpose de-icing ramp, and an $80 million contingency fund for unexpected costs. Additionally, the project will enhance the airport’s baggage handling system to support up to 40 million passengers annually, preparing for future expansions.
Funding for this extensive development will be secured through bonds, backed by the airport’s own revenue streams from airline rents, parking fees, and concessions, which are expected to grow by 15% annually. This financial strategy underscores the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s self-sustaining financial model, independent of city funds.
