Nashville International Airport unveils upgrades for its 40-million-passenger future

Nashville International Airport is moving to unlock its next phase of growth with a full-scale transformation of its central terminal core, a critical upgrade as passenger traffic continues to surge past earlier projections.

The 18-month Central Core Enhancement will modernize one of the airport’s busiest choke points, reinforcing BNA’s push toward a 40 million passenger future as part of its sweeping New Horizon expansion.

The project focuses on the vertical circulation hub at the center of the terminal, where escalators linking ground transportation, baggage claim, and ticketing will be doubled, alongside the addition of a new elevator to improve flow and accessibility. During construction, the central core will be closed, but the airport will continue operating as a single terminal with pedestrian access maintained on Level 1, supported by enhanced wayfinding, staff assistance, and temporary adjustments to baggage claim and public art installations.

The upgrade arrives as BNA prepares for a wave of major additions already in motion, including the planned opening of Concourse A in 2028, followed by a new parking garage and consolidated rental car facility in 2029—positioning the airport to handle long-term demand as Nashville continues to scale.
