Central Florida just got its most vivid look yet at what a Major League Baseball stadium in Orlando could actually look like. The Orlando Dreamers, the local group leading the city's bid for the sport, released new conceptual renderings this week for a domed, 45,000-seat ballpark anchoring a mixed-use district in the tourism corridor, timed to a critical funding pitch in front of Orange County.
Designed by Populous, the architecture firm behind many of baseball's most recognizable modern parks, the stadium would sit on a 35.5-acre site near SeaWorld and the Orange County Convention Center. A dome is not a stylistic flourish here so much as a practical necessity, Central Florida's summer heat and afternoon storms have a way of dictating a schedule that an open-air park can't control. Around the stadium, the Dreamers are picturing three hotel towers totaling roughly 1,000 rooms, Class-A office space, a museum attraction, a multipurpose events center, and a mix of restaurants and retail, built explicitly as a 365-day destination rather than a venue that goes dark between homestands.
The Dreamers are leaning on an updated economic impact study from JLL that projects roughly $32 million a year in tourist-tax revenue and more than $72 billion in economic impact over three decades, along with more than 52,000 permanent jobs on top of the construction employment. The group says it has already lined up more than $1 billion in non-binding letters of intent for construction financing, plus a comparable amount toward acquiring a team, and has pledged to direct hundreds of millions in on-site revenue over 30 years toward county priorities like transportation and workforce housing.
Major League Baseball has signaled plans to add two expansion franchises and realign its divisions by the end of the decade, but formal reviews of candidate cities aren't expected to start before 2027, and the Dreamers have left the door open to landing a team through relocation instead.
