Tennessee Performing Arts Center unveils look at its new world-class downtown Nashville campus

Nashville is getting a defining new cultural landmark, and it’s designed to perform as boldly as the shows inside.

The Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), alongside Hastings Architecture and William Rawn Associates, has unveiled striking new designs for the next-generation Tennessee Performing Arts Center, a 307,000-square-foot campus set to anchor Nashville’s rapidly transforming East Bank. The project introduces one of the city’s most visually ambitious structures yet, wrapped in a flowing curtain of aluminum tubes that shift and shimmer from every angle—an architectural nod to both theater drapery and the rhythm of music itself.

That defining façade isn’t just for show. Composed of bundled aluminum pipes that bend from vertical to horizontal, the exterior creates openings, canopies, and framed views into the building, revealing expansive glass walls that connect the interior to the Cumberland River, downtown skyline, and surrounding park space. BIG founder Bjarke Ingels describes it as a “flowing public pavilion,” designed to feel open and accessible from all directions while visually extending the energy of Broadway across the river.

Inside, the campus is organized around two major performance volumes—a grand Broadway theater and a dedicated dance and opera hall—angled to follow the natural slope of the site as it steps down from the city toward the waterfront.

Between them, a dramatic multi-level lobby acts as a central gathering space, cascading with staircases, mezzanines, and entry points that activate the building throughout the day, not just during performances.

In total, the new TPAC will house four venues, including a black box theater and an intimate cabaret space, alongside rehearsal studios, classrooms, and creative workspaces aimed at supporting Nashville’s growing arts community. A rooftop terrace overlooking the river and skyline is also expected to become one of the city’s most sought-after vantage points.

More than a standalone venue, the project is positioned as a catalyst for the broader East Bank transformation—one of the largest urban redevelopment efforts underway in the U.S. today. Rather than waiting for surrounding development to bring activity, TPAC is being designed to lead it, introducing culture, movement, and public life to the area from day one.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with an anticipated opening in 2030, marking a major shift for an institution that will relocate from its longtime home near the State Capitol.
