Brescia Hospital of the Future

The Hospital of the Future is a comprehensive redevelopment of ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia, the largest hospital campus in Lombardy and one of the biggest in Italy, turning the historic pavilion complex on Piazzale Spedali Civili into an open health campus stitched back into the city. Won through an international design competition by a team led by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Park Associati with Politecnica Building for Humans, Openfabric, Dotdotdot, Eckersley O'Callaghan and Studio Mattioli, the roughly 274 million euro project for ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia and Regione Lombardia delivers a new Main Hospital and a new Children's Hospital across about 60,500 square metres, with more than 745 beds. Three interconnected curved glass volumes reinterpret the campus's historic radial geometry while opening it toward Brescia, and the scheme's defining gesture is the CareRing, a continuous landscaped loop running more than one kilometre around the campus: below grade it carries logistics, technical infrastructure and hospital services so operational traffic never crosses patient routes, while at ground level it becomes public realm linking piazzas, therapeutic gardens and green corridors. Historic pavilions are preserved and repurposed for university teaching and research, clinical and technological functions are consolidated into the new contemporary buildings, and the entire campus is organised around One Health principles, which treat human health, the environment and social systems as a single interdependent field.
