Brescia Hospital of the Future

The Hospital of the Future is a €274 million redevelopment of the ASST Spedali Civili di Brescia, one of Lombardy's largest healthcare campuses, won through an international competition by a team led by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Park Associati with Politecnica Building for Humans. The winning proposal concentrates clinical and technological functions into roughly 60,500 square meters of new construction holding more than 745 beds, organized as a new Main Hospital of three interconnected wings extending toward the Brescia Prealps and a separate Children's Hospital of rounded, cylindrical volumes. Its defining move is the CareRing, a continuous landscaped loop of more than one kilometer that reorganizes the entire campus: below ground it carries logistics, technical infrastructure, and hospital services, while at ground level it becomes a public landscape of tree-lined squares, therapeutic gardens, and green corridors, so patients, staff, and visitors move as freely through gardens as through buildings. Built with a dry-assembled hybrid timber-and-steel structure designed to reduce embodied carbon and allow future reconfiguration, the campus reinterprets engineer Angelo Bordoni's early-twentieth-century radial, hexagonal plan, with the historic pavilions progressively repurposed for academic and research use in partnership with the University of Brescia's Faculty of Medicine, guided throughout by the One Health principle linking human, environmental, and social wellbeing. Construction is expected to begin in 2028.
