The King Fahd Sports City Stadium redevelopment transforms the tent-roofed 1987 national stadium in east Riyadh into a football-first venue of about 70,000 seats. Populous's design removes the running track, digs a new lower tier roughly 10 metres into the ground to bring fans closer to the pitch, and adds a 36,000 square metre cable-net roof, while keeping the original East Stand and the western 'Hive'. A new park, academy and fan zone are planned around it, and it is the centrepiece venue of the AFC Asian Cup and a FIFA World Cup venue. Saudi Binladin Group is the contractor. This is a redevelopment of the existing stadium, replacing the old lower bowl and roof.
