The Lola Mora Cultural Center rises in San Salvador de Jujuy, in the Andean northwest of Argentina, as the final design of César Pelli, who was born in neighboring Tucumán. Pelli Clarke and Partners is the design architect, working with Arturo Beccar Varela y Asociados as architect of record and Balmori Associates on landscape, for the government of Jujuy Province. The 32,291-square-foot building curves through the site beneath a tower carrying wind turbines, and pairs them with photovoltaics and solar thermal collectors to generate about 120 percent of the energy it consumes, targeting LEED Gold. Inside, it gathers six monumental Carrara marble sculptures by Lola Mora, the pioneering Argentine sculptor who died in 1936, bringing them back together for the first time in more than a century.
