Muriwai Downs is a private golf and lifestyle estate taking shape across roughly 500 hectares of former farmland at Muriwai, on the wind-scoured west coast north of Auckland. Its centrepiece is a 19-hole championship course by Californian architect Kyle Phillips, whose credits include Kingsbarns in Scotland, routed through the property's rolling dune country and pastoral ridgelines above the Tasman Sea. Alongside the course the estate carries a luxury lodge of 26 accommodation units and a high-performance sports academy developed with the Institute of Golf, the programme where Lydia Ko trained from the age of five, giving the property a genuine coaching and player-development role rather than a purely resort one. The roughly NZ$113 million project is backed by Zhaoxi Lu, a billionaire who made his fortune as an early figure at Alibaba, and it joins a small cluster of foreign-funded ultra-private courses that have quietly reshaped the top end of New Zealand golf tourism.
