Shanghai Grand Opera House

Shanghai Grand Opera House is a landmark performing-arts venue on the Expo Houtan waterfront, set along the convex bank of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, and designed by Snohetta. The roughly 146,786-square-metre building takes the form of an unfolding fan, wrapped by a sweeping helical staircase that carries visitors up a publicly accessible rooftop plaza open around the clock. Delivered with East China Architectural Design and Research Institute as architect of record, Theatre Projects on theatre planning, and Nagata Acoustics, its deep-red sculptural volumes shape performance halls whose fluid interiors are inspired by the movement of dance.
