The Spurs Arena at Hemisfair is a roughly $1.3 billion NBA arena planned for the former Institute of Texan Cultures parcel at Hemisfair in downtown San Antonio, a 13.45-acre site the city is acquiring to anchor the Project Marvel sports and entertainment district. Spurs Sports and Entertainment selected Overland International to design the roughly 17,000 to 18,000-seat building, with Sasaki master-planning the surrounding district and Marquee Development leading its retail, hospitality and community spaces. Funding comes from a Bexar County venue tax on hotel stays and rental cars approved at the ballot box, city dollars raised in part through the Midtown tax increment reinvestment zone, and the franchise itself, which covers the balance and any overruns. The arena replaces the 1968 HemisFair Texas Pavilion that housed the Institute of Texan Cultures, which has been demolished to leave a graded site ready for construction.
