About the project

Svart is a circular, energy-positive hotel planned at the foot of the Svartisen glacier in Meløy municipality, northern Norway, just above the Arctic Circle on the shore of the Holandsfjorden fjord. Designed by Snøhetta with Arctic Adventure of Norway, Asplan Viak, and Skanska, it is conceived as the world's first energy-positive "Powerhouse" hotel — engineered to cut annual energy consumption by roughly 85% compared with a modern hotel and to produce more energy over its lifetime than it uses in construction, operation, and demolition, making it the world's northernmost Powerhouse building. Its striking ring-shaped form extends from the shoreline out over the fjord on weather-resistant wooden poles, drawing on local vernacular architecture — the "rorbue" fishermen's cabins and "fiskehjell" fish-drying racks — while the circular body gives every room a panoramic view of the glacier, mountains, fjord, and northern lights. The name Svart ("black" in Norwegian) references the deep blue-black ice of Svartisen, Norway's second-largest mainland glacier. Planned with around 100 rooms and integrated solar and geothermal systems, the hotel is intended to anchor a self-sufficient, low-impact Arctic destination oriented around glacier hikes, northern-lights viewing, cold-water immersion, and nature-led wellness, and is expected to operate under the Six Senses brand. The project has been in development for years with a shifting timeline; recent industry sources target an opening around late 2026 to 2027.
