About the project

The Philly Arena is a new indoor venue planned for the former Spectrum site at Broad and Pattison in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, owned in a 50-50 partnership between Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and Comcast Spectacor. Designed by Populous with Moody Nolan, the building answers the Spectrum, the round arena that long housed both the Flyers and the 76ers, with a contemporary reading of its form: a circular volume wrapped in three stacked, slightly offset cantilevered bands that alternate between glazed facade and LED display. A broad arrival stair modeled on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art leads into more than half an acre of outdoor plazas holding food and beverage pavilions, retail and a large screen for gatherings on event days. The arena is planned as the shared home of the 76ers, the Flyers and Philadelphia's WNBA expansion team, and is billed as the largest fully privately funded project in the city's history, projected to generate roughly 15,000 jobs and close to $6 billion in economic activity over its first decade. A joint venture led by Turner Construction and AECOM Hunt, with Philadelphia partners Perryman Construction, Hunter Roberts Construction Group and Camfred Construction, will build it. Comcast holds the naming rights and has not yet announced a formal name.
