About the project

The Whale is a knowledge and experience center dedicated to whales, the ocean and our relationship with them, rising on the waterfront beside the historic Andenes Lighthouse in the village of Andenes, on the northern tip of the island of Andøya in Norway's Vesterålen archipelago, some 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The site looks toward Bleiksdjupa, the deep-sea canyon that draws sperm whales unusually close to shore and has made Andenes one of the world's great whale-watching destinations. Owned by The Whale AS, with Andøy Municipality as its largest shareholder, the cultural attraction was designed by Danish practice Dorte Mandrup after an international competition, with landscape by Marianne Levinsen Landscape, exhibition design by Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Tamschick Media + Space, and engineering by Norconsult. The building emerges from the rocky shoreline as a single sculpted gesture: a parabolic roof carried on curved steel-and-concrete ribs spans a column-free hall, finished in locally sourced stone and vegetation so the structure reads as an extension of the terrain. The roof is publicly accessible, a walkable viewing platform sloping toward the Norwegian Sea and the surrounding archipelago. Inside, exhibition galleries on whales and marine ecosystems combine science, art, storytelling and sound, opening through an expansive glazed facade toward the water, alongside offices, a cafe and a shop, with outdoor paths and viewpoints extending into the landscape.
