Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Expansion

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Expansion is the largest expansion in the Richmond institution's history, adding the five-story McGlothlin Wing II to its campus on North Arthur Ashe Boulevard in the Museum District. Designed by SmithGroup and built by Gilbane Building Company, the roughly 173,000-square-foot addition, paired with about 45,000 square feet of renovation, wraps a fluted concrete-and-glass facade around new galleries for African, American, Indigenous and contemporary art, a 500-seat events space, a second special-exhibition gallery suite and a cafe-bar facing Grove Avenue. The museum remains open to the public throughout the roughly $261 million project.
