Wadi AlFann, the Valley of the Arts, is the Royal Commission for AlUla's plan for a permanent land-art landscape set into sandstone canyons south of AlUla town, covering roughly 65 square kilometres. Masterplanned by Ayers Saint Gross with Buro Happold, it is conceived as a place where monumental works are encountered on foot across the desert. The first five commissions include a tunnel and Skyspace by James Turrell, linear engravings in Quweira sandstone by Michael Heizer, pyramids carved into the rock by Agnes Denes, a subterranean mirror work by Ahmed Mater and Manal AlDowayan's Oasis of Stories, which recalls the Old Town's mud-brick houses. The valley targets a Mostadam Gold baseline with a net-zero ambition, and the Desert X AlUla exhibitions serve as its curatorial prelude.
