About the project

Woodlawn Cemetery is a historic seventeen-acre burial ground on South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach, beside the Norton Museum of Art, where the nonprofit Friends of Woodlawn has proposed a restoration into a publicly accessible cultural park. A master plan developed with Foster + Partners would add tree canopy, redesigned pathways, upgraded roads and expanded gardens while leaving burials undisturbed. An earlier version of the concept centred on a sweeping architectural trellis as a gathering space for small cultural programs, a component the group has since stepped back from after objections from families of the interred. The roughly twenty-million-dollar cost is proposed to be privately funded.
