Miami International Airport is preparing for a major transformation as Miami-Dade County and American Airlines unveil plans for a sweeping $1 billion expansion of Concourse D, designed to modernize the airport’s primary international hub and reshape the passenger experience.

The project centers on Gate D60, a new three-level concourse extension that will add 17 aircraft gates and spacious individual boarding areas designed for larger regional and narrow-body aircraft. The expansion replaces the current setup — where 17 gates share a single boarding space — with dedicated hold rooms for each gate, improved passenger flow, new dining and retail options, and a significantly upgraded baggage handling system. Bright interiors featuring expansive spaces and indoor palm trees are planned as part of the redesign, with convenient third-level access connecting arriving international passengers directly to U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities.

Scheduled to break ground in 2027 and targeted for completion by 2030, the expansion is one of the largest components of the airport’s broader $9 billion modernization initiative known as the M.I.A. Plan.
“The D60 expansion is one of the most monumental customer service improvements within our unprecedented airport-wide modernization plan, which will transform the passenger experience at MIA from the cabin to the curb over the next five years,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “MIA ranks among the fastest-growing global hubs since the pandemic, and this expansion — along with other major projects across the airport — will create a future-ready gateway for decades to come.”
For American Airlines, which accounts for more than 60% of traffic at the airport, the project reinforces Miami’s role as its largest international gateway and a critical hub for flights to Latin America and the Caribbean.

“Miami is an important hub and gateway for American, and it’s an essential part of our history and our future,” said American Airlines CEO Robert Isom. “The brand-new, reimagined D60 is a transformational project that will provide a much-improved experience for our customers and our team.”

The expansion will also incorporate sustainable building features targeting LEED Silver and Envision Verified certifications, aligning the project with national standards for resilient infrastructure and environmentally responsible construction.
Beyond Concourse D, the airport’s broader transformation is reshaping nearly every corner of the campus. By 2031, every terminal at Miami International Airport is expected to be expanded or rebuilt as part of the modernization initiative. Major projects include the upcoming Concourse K expansion in the South Terminal, scheduled for completion in 2029, and the full reconstruction of the aging Central Terminal, one of the airport’s oldest facilities, which is expected to be completed by 2031.

Additional improvements underway across the airport include modernizing more than 600 elevators, escalators, and moving walkways; renovating nearly 200 public restrooms throughout the terminals; and new parking infrastructure. The airport is also planning a new on-site Westin hotel expected to open in 2027, along with a first-of-its-kind private luxury terminal — further strengthening Miami International Airport as one of the country’s fastest-growing and most important global gateways in the world.
