Inside Puakea Golf Course, one of Kauai's most distinctive and fun rounds

Tucked at the base of Mount Haupu in Lihue, Puakea Golf Course is one of Kauai's best-kept golf secrets — and arguably one of the most fun rounds anywhere in Hawaii. Built across more than 200 acres of former sugar cane plantation land, the 18-hole, par-72 layout winds through volcanic cliffs, deep ravines, mountain-fed streams, and lush tropical foliage on the Garden Isle's southeast side.

Designed by the late Robin Nelson — one of Hawaii's most acclaimed course architects — Puakea has a routing unlike anything else on the island. Each of the 18 holes feels genuinely distinct from the next, shaped by the natural drama of the land rather than forced into a uniform template. Nelson himself called it "the most fun course to play in Hawaii," and the description holds up. Players move up, down, and around deep ravines, cross mountain streams, and shift between pali (cliff) and Pacific Ocean views as the round unfolds.

The course has a backstory unlike most. The original 10 holes opened in the late 1990s, with the remaining eight delayed by Hurricane Iniki, which slammed Kauai in 1992. Sports Illustrated named the 10-hole version among the "Top 10" nine-hole facilities in the country, calling it "too spectacular to keep off our list — dramatic in the extreme." In 2002, AOL co-founder Steve Case invested in completing the project, and Nelson finished the final eight holes. The full 18-hole layout officially opened in July 2003 — and the result is a course that plays like a curated highlight reel of Kauai itself.

At 6,954 yards from the tips, with a 73.1 rating and 130 slope, Puakea is challenging from the back tees but approachable from forward sets — built to reward shot-making and creativity without punishing recreational players. Rolling mounds, strategic bunkering, water hazards, and elevation changes shape nearly every hole. The signature par-3 6th plays from an elevated tee down into a green ringed by dense jungle, and the long par-4 14th remains one of the most talked-about holes on the island.

The scenery is the other half of the story. Mount Haupu rises behind the course on the back nine, the Wai'ale'ale Mountain Range frames the driving range, and ocean views open up across the property. Several scenes from the original Jurassic Park were filmed across the land, and the prehistoric, almost cinematic quality of the property is impossible to miss — towering cliffs, sweeping ravines, and tropical undergrowth that feels untouched.

Then there's the wildlife. Puakea sits firmly within Kauai's natural habitat, and the round often doubles as a casual birdwatching tour. Expect to spot Hawaiian wildlife, including the iconic Nene — Hawaii's state bird and one of the rarest geese in the world — alongside white-tailed tropicbirds, native shorebirds, and tropical species that make their home in the surrounding foliage. The Nene in particular is a true Kauai signature, and seeing one on or near a fairway is the kind of moment that stays with a player long after the round.

The clubhouse experience is intentionally relaxed. The Puakea Grille serves Kauai comfort food, breakfast, lunch, and pupus, and the pro shop, full-grass driving range, short-game practice area, and putting green make it easy to spend a half-day here without ever leaving the property. Private instruction is available, and the staff has earned a reputation for one of the warmest, most Aloha-driven welcomes in Hawaiian golf.

Puakea has been recognized across the industry for its blend of design, scenery, and value. It has been ranked among Hawaii's top public courses by GOLF Magazine, named one of the "Best of Kauai" multiple times by The Garden Island newspaper, and consistently appears on Golfweek's lists of the best courses in the state — all at a green fee that runs well below comparable resort-tier rounds on the island.

For a course that doesn't get talked about in the same breath as Kauai's marquee resort layouts, Puakea quietly delivers one of the most distinctive, fun, and scenically rich rounds in all of Hawaii — a route through ravines, cliffs, and tropical wildlife habitat that genuinely feels like the Garden Isle at its most alive.
