Kenya's Maasai Mara has officially landed a new camp on the river. Kinara, A Luxury Safari Camp is now open above a bend in the Mara River, with 21 tented suites, and raised over the water inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve, each with a temperature-controlled private pool looking out to the savannah.
The name comes from the Maasai word for "bearer of light." The site is older than the name: Artichoke Interior Design and Black Sable Architects reworked an existing safari lodge that had stood inside the reserve for a decade, rebuilding it with reclaimed and locally sourced materials throughout.
Nineteen of the 21 suites are one-bedroom tents, each opening onto a spacious deck and a plunge pool that look over the river to the savannah beyond. A two-bedroom family suite runs the same deck-and-pool setup. At the top sits a single three-bedroom signature villa with a private pool of its own.
Inside, the rooms belong to Caline Williams-Wynn, the South African designer behind Artichoke, who worked with local artisans on bespoke furnishings, artwork and decorative pieces. Custom textiles, handcrafted tiles, natural fibers, rattan, carved wooden wall paneling and leather goods run all the way down to the in-room accessories. The Maasai shield is the motif that ties it together, shaping the suite entrance doors and turning up throughout the camp.
The main table is Asili, the signature restaurant, which looks out over the Mara River and the plains with locally inspired cooking, a bar stocked with international spirits and a global wine list. Under the Acacia is the looser room for the hours after a drive: its own bar, a wood-fired pizza oven and artisanal small plates, set among daybeds, sun decks and reading pods along the river. Bush breakfasts and lunches are served under acacia trees, and in-room dining covers the rest.
The Olgilai Wellness Spa works with Organic Savanna products, made from all-natural African ingredients in Laikipia, Kenya. Its hydrotherapy area holds a steam room, a sauna, a salt bath, and hot and cool therapies, every one of them set against views of the Mara.
Guided game drives anchor the day, and the camp fills the hours around them. That means a Discovery Lounge introducing the reserve's biodiversity, conservation work and cultural heritage, a hippo observation deck over the Mara River, and two fire pits for evening storytelling. Members of the Maasai community hold senior roles at the camp, including Head Guide, the person who leads those drives.
SARV Management LLC operates Kinara, with Vivek Mathur as managing director, and his pitch starts with those guides. "For us, true luxury is measured by sharing unforgettable moments in nature with an exceptional guide, moving thoughtfully through the landscape, and creating genuine connections," Mathur said. The camp also works with CER-K, a Kenyan non-profit focused on landscape regeneration and ecosystem restoration, and The Maa Trust, which supports community-led development and nature-based livelihoods.
Getting there runs through the Mara Ol Kiombo or Musiara airstrips, with private road transfers from either, and Nairobi handles the international connections.
Kinara opens into a Mara drawing a new wave of small, high-end camps, with Zamara Private, a six-key property from Great Plains in Koyaki, opening in 2026. Kinara's route in is different: 21 suites on a riverfront site that has hosted safari guests for a decade, rebuilt by a South African design team and Kenyan artisans, and taking guests now.
