Tennessee officials have been engaged in early-stage discussions with The Boring Company to explore a possible underground transit link between Nashville International Airport (BNA) and the city’s downtown core—an ambitious concept that could radically alter how travelers move in and out of Music City.
Multiple sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that conversations began several months ago, centered around a potential tunnel spanning five to ten miles, depending on the final route. While still in the exploratory phase, the vision echoes The Boring Company’s growing transportation network in Las Vegas, where Teslas shuttle passengers through a system of narrow underground tunnels.

The Boring Company has seen mixed success with similar projects nationwide. While the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop—its flagship tunnel system—has expanded to several casino properties and received approval for a future 68-mile network, other proposed tunnels in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, and Fort Lauderdale have stalled. The company also signed a memorandum with Dubai this year to explore tunnel infrastructure in the UAE, and has completed private tunnels under Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.
If realized, the Nashville project would address a long-standing transportation gap between BNA and downtown, a corridor that sees consistent congestion and rising demand thanks to Nashville’s record-setting tourism, booming convention scene, and a multibillion-dollar airport expansion. BNA recently surpassed 25 million annual passengers, adding urgency to the search for modern mobility solutions.
