Grand Green Osaka is the second and final phase of the Umekita redevelopment, the transformation of a former freight rail yard immediately north of Osaka Station into the city's flagship new quarter. Its organising idea inverts the usual downtown formula: a large public park occupies the centre of the site, and the buildings are arranged around and through it rather than the reverse, with landscape design by Seattle practice GGN threading meadow, woodland and water across ground that carried freight tracks for a century. The district is built out in north and south blocks whose towers stack luxury hotels, rental and for-sale residences, Grade A offices, retail and an innovation and events complex intended to seed startups and research tenants. Ground-level pedestrian routes knit the quarter directly into Osaka Station, the Umeda retail concentration and the new underground platforms that put Kansai International Airport within a single ride. Delivered in phases, it is among the largest urban redevelopments in Japan and the centrepiece of Osaka's effort to rebuild its centre of gravity around public space rather than pure commercial density.
