About the project

The Hainan Performance Art Centre is a Heatherwick Studio-designed cultural landmark anchoring the emerging Jiangdong quarter east of central Haikou. Commissioned by the Haikou Tourism and Culture Investment Holding Group through an international design competition, the roughly 101,600-square-meter complex gathers an opera house, a concert hall, and a theatre with a combined capacity of about 3,800 seats beneath a single sculptural roof of layered, porous terraces. The form draws on Hainan's volcanic landscape and tropical ecology, its stacked, planted tiers resembling colorful erupting volcanoes while promoting natural ventilation and shade in the island's hot, humid climate. Rehearsal, education, and arts-production spaces round out a venue conceived to make Haikou an international performing-arts hub.
