Hainan Performance Art Centre

The Hainan Performance Art Centre rises as a cluster of sculptural, volcano-like cones clad in multi-hued rectangular tiles, an image drawn from Hainan's volcanic landscape and the colour and movement of Hainanese Opera. Beneath a single undulating roof it gathers an opera house, a concert hall, and a theatre with a combined capacity of roughly 3,800, while the curving canopy shelters a run of open-air, publicly accessible spaces conceived as a social hub and civic extension of the surrounding district. The venue is built to stage everything from grand opera, ballet, and musicals to avant-garde drama, fashion, and immersive multimedia. Its form responds directly to the tropical climate and local ecology, shading and cooling the interior halls while cutting energy use, and its tiled skin ties the building to the island's distinctive material palette.
