About the project

Keystone Tower is set to become Adelaide's first true skyscraper, a 183-metre, 37-storey landmark rising behind the heritage-listed Grand Lodge of Freemasons on North Terrace, the ceremonial boulevard that carries the city's museums, galleries and university frontages. A joint venture between Melbourne's Pelligra Group and Freemasons SA & NT, designed by Walker Brooke Architects with Bara Consulting Group, the tower is a tear-down and infill on the rear of the Masonic block: the 1927 Adelaide Masonic Centre at the North Terrace frontage is retained and restored for continued Masonic use, while the Great Hall behind it is demolished to free the tower footprint. Inside, the building carries South Australia's first Westin hotel with 236 rooms under Marriott International, alongside offices, student accommodation, conference facilities, a business lounge and a wellness retreat, with several levels given over to a museum of the state's Masonic history. It is crowned by a three-level observatory that opens the skyline to the public, and the developers plan to run an abseiling attraction down the tower's face, an unusually civic gesture for a building that will stand roughly 40 metres clear of anything else on the Adelaide skyline.
