About the project

The Nanhai Art Center is a waterfront cultural complex designed by MAD Architects for the Nanhai Cultural District in Foshan, at the heart of the Greater Bay Area between Guangzhou and Foshan. Three sculpted buildings — a grand theatre, a museum, and a sports center — are gathered beneath a single continuous "floating" canopy whose undulating form reads as a wave of water rippling toward the adjacent lake. A visual axis pulls the surrounding landscape into the complex, dissolving the boundary between civic building and public park, while the shaded space beneath the canopy becomes an open civic room for gathering. The design continues MAD's pursuit of an emotive, nature-woven civic architecture at the scale of a regional cultural destination.
