New San Siro Stadium

The New San Siro Stadium is the shared home ground planned for AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano in Milan's San Siro district, designed by Foster + Partners with MANICA following the two clubs' purchase of the existing stadium site from the city. The bowl is set at roughly 71,500 seats across two steep tiers rather than the three of the current Giuseppe Meazza, a deliberate trade of raw capacity for sightlines, proximity to the pitch and modern hospitality, and it is covered by a fixed roof rather than a retractable one. The stadium anchors a wider regeneration of the roughly 281,000-square-metre site, with more than half of the ground given over to public green space - on the order of 80,000 square metres of parkland handed back to the city once construction is finished. The new ground is built alongside the Meazza, which stays in use throughout; most of the old stadium is then demolished, with the Curva Sud and the south-east corner preserved and converted into a museum with entertainment and commercial space, keeping a fragment of the original structure standing on the redeveloped site.
