About the project

The Shibuya Upper West Project is a landmark mixed-use redevelopment rising on the former Tokyu Department Store flagship and Bunkamura site in Tokyo's Shibuya district. Developed by Tokyu Corporation, L Catterton Real Estate, and Tokyu Department Store, the roughly 119,000-square-meter tower is the largest Japanese project to date by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta. Its ceramic-and-glass façade, broken by cascading green terraces, wraps retail at street level, a contemporary luxury hotel by Swire Hotels' House Collective in the middle floors, and rental residences above. Signature spaces include The Hive, a lively central atrium, and The Sanctuary, a rooftop garden, alongside the relocated and expanded Bunkamura Museum of Art, bringing Shibuya one of its first true luxury hotels.
