About the project

The Shinjuku Station West Exit Redevelopment is a 48-storey, roughly 260-metre mixed-use landmark rising directly above the west side of Shinjuku Station, the world's busiest rail interchange. A three-company venture of Odakyu Electric Railway, Tokyu Land Corporation and Tokyo Metro, designed by Nihon Sekkei with Taisei Corporation and built by Taisei, the tower replaces the demolished main building of the Odakyu Department Store, torn down to clear the roughly 15,720-square-metre site. Its roughly 279,000 square metres of floor area stack the largest retail complex in the Shinjuku area across levels from the second basement to the tenth floor, then business-incubation and start-up space, then column-free office floors climbing toward the crown, where an observation and experience deck opens the skyline to the public. Five basement levels knit the building directly into the JR, Odakyu, Keio, Tokyo Metro and Toei concourses, and the tower stands as the flagship first phase of the Shinjuku Grand Terminal concept, a long-range plan to unpick the station's notoriously tangled passageways and rebuild the district around walkable ground-level plazas and pedestrian decks. At full height it overtakes the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building as the tallest structure in Shinjuku.
