Sunset Place is the full redevelopment of the Shops at Sunset Place at 5701 Sunset Drive, the aging late-1990s retail center that has anchored downtown South Miami for a generation. Midtown Development, an affiliate of Midtown Opportunities, bought the property for $65.5 million and commissioned London's Heatherwick Studio, with ODP Architecture & Design, to replace it with a walkable urban village rather than another mall. The approved plan lays out seven towers of twelve to thirty-three stories holding 1,513 residences and a 287-room hotel, woven into a reinstated street grid of smaller shops, restaurants and public plazas. Cultural and workplace uses round it out, including a 1,300-seat movie theater and performing arts stage, roughly 150,000 square feet of retail and dining, and more than 50,000 square feet of workspace. The site sits directly beside the South Miami Metrorail station, and the city's approval attaches performance benchmarks tied to lifting the property's taxable value.
