The Bass Museum of Art expansion adds roughly 22,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space to the southwest corner of the museum's campus in Collins Park, Miami Beach. Designed by Los Angeles studio Johnston Marklee, the scheme sets two rectangular pavilions on a thin concrete plane raised off the ground to meet resiliency guidelines, with the primary new exhibition galleries inside the pavilions and a skylight on the volume nearest Arata Isozaki's earlier addition. Beneath the raised structures sit shaded courtyards and a backlit oculus, perforated facades filter light, and one blank pavilion wall doubles as an outdoor screen for film screenings and performances. The project extends a campus that began with Russell Pancoast's Art Deco building and Isozaki's expansion, and is supported by a $20.1 million allocation from Miami Beach's General Obligation Bond.
