The Broad Expansion

The Broad Expansion is a 55,000-square-foot companion building to The Broad contemporary art museum in Downtown Los Angeles, rising on the Hope Street side of the museum's Bunker Hill block and designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the practice behind the original building. The roughly $100 million project, built by MATT Construction, increases the museum's gallery space by about 70 percent across three new floors of galleries, and adds a publicly accessible art storage gallery where visitors can move among the collection racks, flexible space for live programming and performance, and two open-air courtyards on the top floor. Its architecture reworks the "veil and vault" idea the original museum introduced, wrapping a patterned honeycomb veil around a sculptural core that holds the collection stores, while The Broad itself stays open throughout construction. The addition deepens Grand Avenue's cultural spine, extending a district that already gathers Walt Disney Concert Hall, MOCA and the Colburn School into one of the densest concentrations of contemporary art and performance architecture in the United States.
