Washington Dulles International Airport Transformation

The Washington Dulles International Airport Transformation is a multibillion-dollar overhaul of the Dulles, Virginia gateway led by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority with United Airlines and backed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Airports Authority board has approved a construction program of roughly $19.9 billion, funded primarily through Airports Authority bonds repaid by airline rates and charges rather than federal dollars. The plan adds or renovates more than 5 million square feet of terminal space, replacing the aging Concourses C and D with new concourses, expanding the Eero Saarinen-designed Main Terminal while preserving its landmark exterior, and creating a new international arrivals path that lets passengers walk directly to Customs. Dulles' long-criticized mobile lounge people movers will be retired in favor of an extended AeroTrain, new passenger and baggage tunnels and additional moving walkways. The program also brings expanded security screening and baggage systems, more seating and lounges including one of the world's largest United Polaris Lounges, and a vast new parking structure beside the Main Terminal, with work phased so the airport stays fully operational throughout.
