One of the largest cultural redevelopment projects anywhere in the world, the Western Range scheme rebuilds roughly 15,650 square meters of the British Museum, about a third of its total gallery space, housing the collections from ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, Assyria and the Middle East to the west of the Great Court. Paris-based Lina Ghotmeh Architecture won a hard-fought international competition against more than 60 practices, including OMA and David Chipperfield Architects, with an archaeological approach that layers new architecture into the Grade I listed Bloomsbury landmark, working alongside conservation architect Purcell, engineer Arup and artist Ali Cherri. The project anchors the museum's wider masterplan, the most significant transformation of the institution since the Great Court.
