The museum is drawn as a single elegant line, like a calligraphic brushstroke, its curved concave glass facade rippling to evoke moving water. With the site surrounded by water on three sides, the building is lifted several metres to create a covered, shaded public realm beneath it. Roughly 50,000 square metres of galleries span two levels, while a mountain-shaped conference-centre-and-hotel volume anchors the complex, embodying the classical composition of water in front and mountain behind. Landscaped roof gardens and canal-edge plantings tie the whole back into its waterway ecology at the junction of the Grand Canal and the Hanggang River.
