King Khalid University Stadium in Abha is planned to grow from a 12,000-seat university ground into one of the host venues of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, at around 2,200 metres in the Aseer highlands. Populous's redesign adds a new permanent west stand and temporary stands on the other sides to reach 45,428 seats for the tournament, wrapped in a pale, faceted canopy that reads as a glowing crown above the city at night, with a roof framing the pitch and new concourses and fan plazas. After the tournament the temporary seating is removed and the stadium reverts to a smaller legacy capacity for the university and local clubs.
