Banyan Tree Hakone Ashinoko brings the Singaporean group's wellness-driven resort model to the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone, the caldera lake in Kanagawa Prefecture that has drawn travellers out of Tokyo for centuries on the strength of its onsen waters and its framed views of Mount Fuji across the water. The property is being developed by World Brands Collection Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality arm of an integrated real estate group and a subsidiary of Wealth Management, Inc., as part of a broader push to place international luxury flags across Japan alongside brands including Six Senses. The resort is conceived around the pairing that defines Banyan Tree — spa and wellness programming at the centre, low-slung pavilion architecture worked into the landscape, and a strong bias toward the surrounding natural setting — here mapped onto Hakone's volcanic terrain of cedar forest, geothermal springs and lakeshore. Its position within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park places it among Japan's most protected and most visited scenery, an hour and a half or so from central Tokyo.
