The Colburn Center is the Colburn School's 100,000-square-foot campus expansion on Bunker Hill in Downtown Los Angeles, designed by Frank Gehry and Gehry Partners a few blocks from his Walt Disney Concert Hall. Its centerpiece is Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall, a 1,000-seat in-the-round concert hall with an orchestra pit, a large stage for orchestra, dance, opera and jazz, natural light, and adjustable acoustic clouds above the performers, tuned by Yasuhisa Toyota of Nagata Acoustics with Michael Ferguson. A new Dance Center houses the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute with a 100-seat Studio Theater and four professional-sized studios, roughly tripling the school's dance space. Interlocking opaque and glass volumes step down the site, the opaque ones clad in metal with a pink 'Pink Kandi' finish, with a light-filled entrance and gardens at street and rooftop level. The hall is home to the Colburn Orchestra and the downtown base of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
