Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 5

Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 5 is the centrepiece of the Changi East development, a 1,080-hectare greenfield expansion on the eastern edge of Changi. Commissioned by Changi Airport Group, the terminal is designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox with Heatherwick Studio as design partner, alongside local partner Architects 61 and a consultant team including SAA Architects, RSP Architects Planners and Engineers, DP Architects, Field Operations, Arup Singapore, Mott MacDonald and Surbana Jurong. Rather than one undifferentiated hall, T5 is planned as a cluster of human-scaled neighbourhoods threaded with tropical planting and daylight, with an underground automated people mover and baggage handling system linking it directly to Terminal 2 and the rest of the airport. The terminal and its first satellite building total roughly 1.6 million square metres and are sized for up to 50 million passengers a year in the first phase, lifting airport-wide capacity beyond 135 million. Sustainability is central to the brief, with the project targeting Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification through a solar roof, district cooling and smart building systems. T5 anchors a wider programme that also delivers Changi's three-runway system, new cargo facilities and a ground transportation centre.
