Buffalo Bayou East

Buffalo Bayou East is Buffalo Bayou Partnership's extension of Houston's signature greenway roughly four miles east of downtown, threading through the East End and Fifth Ward neighborhoods along the bayou's industrial edge. Master planned by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates with Utile, Greenberg Consultants and HR&A Advisors, the framework calls for some 415 acres of open space linked by more than 36 miles of trails, plus mixed-income housing and restored waterfront access. Its centerpiece is the expansion of the City of Houston's Tony Marron Park from 19 to nearly 40 acres, with soccer fields, nature play, a water playscape and an event shed. A second anchor, Turkey Bend, converts a former barge terminal and historic wharf on Navigation Boulevard into a public landing with kayak and boat-tour access, community retail and a Hispanic History Research Center. The plan is explicitly a post-Hurricane Harvey resilience project, pairing hydrologic stabilization with equitable park access in neighborhoods historically short of green space, backed by a $310 million public-private investment.
