Historic Gas Plant District

The Historic Gas Plant District is an approximately 86-acre redevelopment of the Tropicana Field site in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, aimed at restoring a historically Black neighborhood displaced decades ago by the stadium and interstate. Under The Burg Bid, master developer Blake Investment Partners, with Miami's Related Group as co-developer, Elliott Investment Management as capital partner and the Pinellas County Housing Authority as a partner, plans an approximately $8.1 billion mixed-use district of residential neighborhoods, office, retail, hotel, civic and cultural space organized around a 13-acre central park. The team would buy roughly 58 acres for $275 million while the city retains about a third of the land. A Museum Row is anchored by the Woodson African American Museum of Florida, planned among the earliest pieces of the district, and the plan commits to more than 3,600 affordable and workforce homes, about half built within the district and half on sites across St. Petersburg. St. Pete firm Wannemacher Jensen Architects leads the design, and the multi-phase buildout is tied to community benefits honoring the Gas Plant legacy.
