The North Carolina Museum of History is undergoing the most significant transformation in its downtown Raleigh history, a state-funded expansion and renovation that grows the building by roughly 40,000 square feet and enlarges gallery space by about a quarter. The project opens a more accessible, relocated entrance on the north side of Bicentennial Plaza and threads in new climate-control systems engineered to safeguard the museum's collection of more than 150,000 artifacts. Beyond galleries, the scope adds a new restaurant, additional classrooms, flexible community spaces, and critical infrastructure upgrades. Positioned among the State Capitol, the legislative complex, and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, the reinvented institution is designed to tell a broader, more inclusive story of the state and to reopen as a modernized cultural anchor on Raleigh's civic mall.
