Samsung Daechi Ssangyong 1 Redevelopment

The Samsung Daechi Ssangyong 1 Redevelopment is a high-density residential scheme in Daechi-dong, the school-district heart of Seoul's Gangnam-gu, replacing a five-building complex of 630 aging units with six new towers rising to 49 storeys and carrying close to 1,000 homes. Studio Libeskind leads the design with HJ Design Partners and SAMOO Architects & Engineers, and Samsung C&T's engineering and construction arm is building it. Libeskind treats the cluster as a single composition rather than repeated slabs: light-toned vertical fins run across the facades in curving bands that shift as the sun moves and as residents circulate the site, giving the towers a legibly hand-drawn quality at a scale usually reserved for anonymous housing blocks. The result is pitched as a living work of art in a district where redevelopment has typically favored uniformity, and where Gangnam land values make design differentiation newly valuable.
