Park Avenue Redesign

The Park Avenue Redesign remakes 11 blocks of Park Avenue between East 46th and East 57th Streets in Midtown East, Manhattan. NYC DOT released the final concept on September 17, 2026, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn. The plan widens the avenue's medians into landscaped pedestrian space with seating, plantings, temporary art installations and new viewing points toward Grand Central Terminal and the MetLife Building, removes one travel lane in each direction, converts a southbound vehicle lane into a two-way protected bike lane in its own dedicated space beside the medians, adds crosswalks linking the medians along the corridor, and introduces dedicated left-turn signal phases. Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners leads design with Thornton Tomasetti and TYLin. The $39 million project is funded through the East Midtown Public Realm Improvement Fund created by the 2017 Greater East Midtown Rezoning, and is coordinated with Metro-North's rehabilitation of the Grand Central Terminal train shed beneath the avenue, with the blocks from 46th to 50th and 50th to 53rd Streets advancing first alongside the MTA work.
